    Basic obedience training. I tried my 18 month old Airedale on agility. She did the whole course beautifully -then she got the zoomies. I never meant to train her in professional agility so I thought it was hilarious . The trainer did not. I love watching agility work; if I were younger and could run the course with her-maybe. But the Airedale has an antic sense of humor. That’s why I’ve had three of them. I know it can be done but the Airedale is a difficult choice. All my dogs were beautifully trained. Plenty of people stopped me on the street in amazement. They’d say, that is the best trained dog I’ve ever seen. I’d say, we did it together. There is nothing better in this world than walk-in in tandem with your dog at your side. You become one being doing your thing. By the way, I don’t use the stay command. If I put a dog in a sit, she stays until released. The stay is implied. I loved your video. Thank you for loving dogs and knowing what they need from us.

    I used all of these methods and I did a lot of foundation work, The contacts were great, but suddenly my dog has started jumping off the top of the A-frame and the dogwalk at her agility classes. I don't know how to correct it. The trainer said I need to keep her on the lead until she understands. I'm really not sure what has happened to stop her wanting to go down the ramps. The vet has checked her over and said she's very fit.

      Why figure out what to do with the leash? Several reasons, but mainly because putting the leash in a location that will not interfere with your dog's run, or put the leash runner in a position that they could be a distraction to your dog while collecting the leash.

    Will have to try this. Am doing the positive interrupter at the moment (only on day 3 of 3 weeks of conditioning). My Beagle/JRT mix, whose revert to mode is barking (and it's one of those nails on a chalkboard barks - goes right through you) was attacked about 6 months ago by 3 dogs. She is still able to do the Rodeo Dog exercises - just the 2 of us in the ring - concrete wall divider - but by the last run, she's just barking to bark, doesn't matter if i have steak at that point - doesn't care. And we're done. Time to go home. Have done the removal technique, correcting of course is out of the question - just makes it worse plus don't want that kind of relationship. Feeding bigger chunks of treats. Rodeo Dog class tomorrow - we'll see how it goes.

    This is where I'm at right now with my pup. We went to our first trial. It was her first, as well as mine. She won three blue ribbons!!! However, she did it for me, which is a start. However, the enthusiasm for running the obstacles isn't where it needs to be. That's what led me to this video. I was looking for info. on how to create an enthusiasm for the obstacles for my dog. How to make practicing the funnest time of her day and trials super exciting for her. Hopefully, I can create that for her.

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 2 месяца назад

      There are lots of ways to create enthusiasm for the obstacles, and I'm going to share the easiest way that will also make it joyful for you. Since your dog is doing this for you, each time they engage with and do an obstacle, show them how happy you are! For example, when my dog does an obstacle correctly, I stop and celebrate! I tell them how brilliant they are, how amazing and I have a big smile on my face. That makes my dog happy and then they are eager to do it again. If your dog is doing it for you, then show up being the most gracious team mate. It's easy and powerful.

    We need to learn how to make that sharp turn from an A Frame or dog walk into a tunnel. Do you have any videos or short courses for this? I’m thinking I need to start on the flat to just get him to turn away from me with my off arm, then add a cue like “turn”, then take it to the tunnel and when all of that is solid on cue to introduce a plank approach. Am I close? Thanks so much for any advice!

    Do the qualifying scores need to be double Qs? For example, can I enter jumpers on Saturday and standard on Sunday and if my dog gets a Q does that count towards novice?

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 4 месяца назад

      Hi there! Great question and the scores do not need to be Double Q's for the regular titling which includes Novice, Open and Exc/Master. So yes, if you enter JWW on Saturday and Std on Sunday, a Q that you earn in each of those classes will count toward your progression in that class. So a Novice JWW Q counts toward the Novice JWW title, etc.

    • @hope1922
      @hope1922 4 месяца назад

      @SpotOnAgilityLisa amazing thank you! Follow up, what would happen if I have more jumpers Qs than standard? Would I move up to open jumpers and novice standard or would I have to wait to earn the respective Qs for standard and move together?

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 4 месяца назад

      @@hope1922 This happens all the time! Yes, if you earn 3 JWW Qs, you can move up to Open JWW (it's optional, you don't have to, but why not?!?!). Then, you remain in Novice Std until you earn those required Qs. It's common to be in different levels in different classes.

    • @hope1922
      @hope1922 4 месяца назад

      @@SpotOnAgilityLisa thaaaank you! Final question, why do people care so much about double Qs then?

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 4 месяца назад

      @@hope1922 Now that's a YT explanation video I need to do!!!! In short, they are a sign of consistency and achievement which, at the Master level, is rewarded and required to obtain Championship titles in some organizations (like AKC). It's a higher qualifying standard for things like the AKC Nationals as well. So for now, take it one run at a time and enjoy each one :)

    I love these videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! What a blessing!!! Here is my lil journey how I got here: I have soo many stressful things in my life that are beyond my control. I wanted a dog back in my life to give me some love and sanity. LOL. Everyone said NO, you are alone, on disability, have a house to repair, you have your special needs brother to take care of… Yada Yada Yada… so I prayed and asked the Lord if it was the right thing at this time to get a puppy & so I would know it was an answer from Him… the dog would be “free” AANND the people would pay for the first shots. Then I would know! 2 days later a relative announced their Australian Shepherds were pregnant, and my sister asked how much because I was wanting a puppy. They said if she wants one, we will GIVE her one, and we will even pay for her shots for her! So now I have Sunny! I know they need exercise so I thought I might make it fun with some agility equipment and she is SO good with our lil practices I thought maybe we should do this!!! I know absolutely nothing! So here we are and we are diving in. Sunny was born on Christmas so she’s almost 4 months! Do I HAVE to get lessons? *I’m on very limited income. Or can I do this on my own?

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 4 месяца назад

      Welcome to the fun world of dog agility and Sunny sounds like such a blessing to you! As for lessons, I tell everyone that there is so much you can do AT HOME, BEFORE heading out to lessons! There are so many exercises and skills to create, and once you have them, they will make the possible future lessons much easier. Many people start out at home. Just know at some point you will need to work with someone as a coach, but there are so many online options that make things very affordable when you're ready. For example, I have a monthly membership that includes video lessons and unlimited coaching. The bonus is that the monthly cost is less than a single 50-minute lesson. So, you have options!!!!! P.S. my youngest dog's name is Sunny too!

      Best of luck! Living, kind of, on disability can be strenuous indeed. I couldn't have made it through tough times without my dog angels. Someone to care for, helps me to care for myself: dogs love routines! My new shelter dog, Helen, whom I plan to train in agility, eats my diet: veggies, fruits, eggs, everything I eat. Also some kibble--but I have gone on this diet to clear arteries, and it is so healthy. That is so nice about the shots being gifted from a relative. I have gone to KMart for $39 a month pet care, includes vaccine shots, nail trims, checkups, but the first visit is $79.

    • @SpotOnAgilityLisa
      @SpotOnAgilityLisa 4 месяца назад

      Great question and I'm happy to clarify. Often times we humans focus on or relive a moment when something went wrong. In dog agility, there are sooooo many decisions being made in a training or competition, and rather than focusing on the small percentage of things we didn't do perfectly, we should instead remember the things we did well. When it comes to practicing, it's a little different. We should practice our weaknesses and also our strengths. We need to get good and develop one and we need the confidence and refresher of the other. Make sense?

      Some handlers like the mental 'feel' of FEO, because they tend to take competition too seriously. In those cases, FEO is GREAT for them and allows them to focus only on the training/fun mentality without feeling judged.

    I remember when judges decided whether it was going to be a sit or a down. My Sheltie, in competitions, WOULD NOT lay down on the table, and I swear it was a down most of the time. When the judges opted for a sit I could have hugged them there and then. It’s so much better now that we can decide as long as they stay in the table for those five counts. Funny thing is, my current dog loves the table. It cracks me up.

      After my first agility dog thought the table was a launching pad, I made sure to train it and every dog since has loved it. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's fun to remember 'when things used to be...' :) - Lisa

    Why do you like the double bar jump at the start?

      Me personally? I don't use the Double bar/Double Spread Jump as the first obstacle (there may have been 1 time in the last 25 years and that was due to a smaller ring size). However, AKC course design does allow for this. I would suspect it is because, as I just mentioned, some of the indoor rings we design for can be 'compact' compared to full-size outdoor rings. Especially the ones we refer to as 'bowling alleys' where they are long and narrow. In a case like this, I would imagine the judge prefers to have a straight approach to the Double and can best accomplish that by putting it at the start. Great question, thank you for asking! Lisa
